The way Terraria's spawning system works, is that there is a spawn cap, and spawn probability approaches 0 as you reach spawn cap. Hence, if you do not kill mobs who are not outright preventing you from accessing an area, you should simply ignore those mobs. This way, you fill out the spawn cap, and prevent more mobs from spawning. This allows you to preserve your life, and save time on killing mobs in the long-run.
