Blocks & Decoration Wider Trap Variety

The intent for this thread was to increase the variety of traps available to players in both singleplayer and multiplayer. Some trap designs are now found impossible to program in Terraria 1, and would more likely fit in Terraria 2 if it is programmed in such a way. Other traps suggested here are craftable alternates to existing traps with crafting and related strength associated with the point in the game a player is likely to make them.

For starters, I will admit we have a good trap variety currently. It would be interesting to apply a few more. Partially for wider mob defense and a more versatile set of items for mapmakers to play with.

Changes to trap mechanics

- Allow trap faces to be adjusted using a hammer.

Spear_Trap3.png
Spear_Trap4.png

Would permit existing trap devices, such as spear traps, to face in directions other than specifically designated.

(Implemented into the game)

- Add Tripwire Triggers
Pressure plates are limited in their placement as they can only be set on ground tiles. They cannot be placed on the walls, the ceiling, or in the air. A tripwire trigger would function similarly to wires, activating whenever something crosses the line, and triggering whatever mechanism(s) the line is attached to. Has the potential for new trap layouts, home security, and defense against aerial mobs and flying players.

(Implemented into the game, sort of)

New traps

- Cursed Flame Trap
CursedFlameTrap.png

An upgrade to the standard Flame Trap, but has a shorter range. Would cause damage more damage than the standard Flame Trap and inflict the Cursed Inferno debuff for a specified amount of time. Damages players and mobs.

- Frostburn Trap
FrostburnTrap.png

Another upgrade to the standard Flame Trap, but has a longer range. Would cause less damage than the standard Flame Trap and inflict the Frostburn debuff for a specified amount of time. Damages both players and mobs.

- Ichor Dart Trap
IchorDartTrap.png

An upgrade to the Dart Trap. Would cause damage to players and mobs and inflict the Ichor debuff for a specified amount of time.

- Frost Dart Trap

An upgrade to the Dart Trap. Would cause damage to players and mobs and inflict the Chilled debuff for a specified amount of time. An additional hit under the effect of the Chilled debuff would add the Frozen debuff for a specified amount of time.

- Crystal Bullet Trap

An upgrade to the Dart Trap. Fires a projectile identical in function to a Crystal Bullet. Damages players and mobs.

- Dagger Trap

- Acid Trap

- Spider Trap

An upgrade to the Super Dart Trap. Would cause damage and inflict the Venom debuff to players and mobs for a specified amount of time.

- Chlorophyte Dart Trap

An upgrade to the Super Dart Trap. Fires a slow moving dart that homes in on the nearest hostile mob.

- Charged Spikes
ChargedSpikes.gif

An upgrade to the Spike block. Would cause contact damage. Causes damage to mobs, unlike other Spike blocks. Wires + Spikes perhaps would be a good crafting recipe.

- Dust Trap

Spits out a cloud of dust. Would cause damage and inflict the Darkness debuff to players for a specified amount of time.

- Loaded Piston
LoadedPiston.png
LoadedPistonExtended.png

A sidegrade to the Spear Trap. Once triggered, it produces a piston that pushes back players and mobs a distance of ten blocks or more. Causes damage if the player or mob is crushed in between the piston and other solid blocks. If a player stands on an upward facing piston, the piston will function like a lift. Pistons could be able to ignore platforms in order achieve this effect.

- Chaos Beam Trap
ChaosBeamTrap.png

Fires a short beam of energy. Any player hit by it is inflicted with the Chaos State debuff for a specified amount of time.

- Gunk Trap
GunkTrap.png

An upgrade to the Spiky Ball trap. Any player or mob hit by the gunky material will take damage and be inflicted with the Slow debuff for a specified amount of time. Crafting materials include Slime Blocks.

- Inferno Trap
InfernoTrap.png

Once triggered, the trap would gain a fire ring for a specified amount of time. Inflicts the Burning debuff to unprotected players within the proximity of the fire ring.

- Tax Trap
TaxTrap.png

A trap disguised as a Gold Coin stuck in the wall. It fires a projectile that removes a percentage of a player's currently held money if the player is hit by it. Alternatively, the player drops the money as opposed to it simply disappearing.

- Life Siphon Trap
LifeSiphonTrap.png

If activated, steadily drains the life of any players within a certain proximity of the trap for a specified amount of time. If possible, multiple active traps will increase this effect.

- Mana Siphon Trap
ManaSiphonTrap.png

If activated, steadily drains the mana of any players within a certain proximity of the trap for a specified amount of time. If possible, multiple active traps will increase this effect.

- Item Breaker Trap
ItemBreakerTrap.png

If activated, destroys any loose items within a certain proximity of the trap. Items above a certain rarity are immune to its effect.

- Confusion Trap
ConfusionTrap.png

If activated, inflicts the Confused debuff to any players or mobs within a certain proximity to the trap.

- Battle Trap

If activated, players within a certain proximity of the trap gain the Battle debuff for a specified amount of time.

That's all. Will add additional trap ideas if interesting ones are suggested.

Sprites created by myself. They're not exactly works of art or anything. It's just a visual display has more impact.

It started off nice, but eventually you went a bit overboard. The Tax Trap, Life Siphon Trap, Mana Siphon Trap and Item Breaker Trap are frustrating annoyances.
But I would definitely like to see more traps and the possibility to rotate traps. :)

Some of these traps, such as the ones you listed, are suggested for the purpose of arenas and mapmakers, as I've stated. The tax trap is to burn Coin Gun users, the siphon traps are for mapmaking purposes, and the item breaker trap is for arenas dealing with cleanup that comes from the summoning of hostile mobs which drop a lot of junk.
