To be fair, I'm kind of a noob and I've never played on a dedicated server, only with friends. I've always been curious about how people make it work in long-term dedicated servers. (Vanilla) Terraria worlds have finite resources and finite space (that is arguably pretty small), and without mods you don't really have the ability to go to other worlds. What do dedicated servers do to solve this conundrum? Do they just reset every so often or something? Do they instead shift to a different goal with the server, like roleplaying or serving as a social hub? Do they use mods?
What is your experience with servers? Would you say they are worth checking out? What have your favorite dedicated servers been and why?
Also, sorry if this thread is in the wrong place. I don't think it's exactly a "game" question (more of a community one) and it obviously doesn't belong in the dedicated servers category, since I'm only asking about them and not hosting one.
I tried looking in the dedicated servers advertised here on this forum; it seems it's mostly people hosting (temporary?) servers to play alongside randoms in, whereas the longer-term servers seem more focused on the social and building aspect or use mods(?) to fix some of the problems I mentioned. I also tried searching elsewhere for what people have to say about Terraria servers, but mostly those results yielded a lot of people saying that Terraria isn't really a good game for dedicated servers, lol.
Also, this is a more specific questions: is actual text-based roleplay in-game a thing at all? I'd probably enjoy playing a dedicated server for that reason, since I've roleplayed in games for a long time myself, but Terraria doesn't seem like the kind of game to be home to a roleplay community, either, despite what potential it might have as one.
