Xbox360 Stairs?

Ok so I see alot of videos and pictures of people having stairs for terraria 1.2 which is what the xbox is at... but when i go to use a hammer on wooden platforms (like ive seen in tutorials) the platforms dont turn into stairs but instead the drop down a little and change a lil... idk how to describe it but i dont have a camera. Does anyone else have this proble? or an explanation?

you have to hit the stairs more than once

... they only have two functions either hit once to put them down half a block or hit them again to put back up
