Yggdrasil

The norsemen are on their way.

A Viking and Norse Mythology related mod in progress

Yggdrasil is a small content mod adding Viking and Norse Mythology related items and enemies.
This mod wants to be an addition to vanilla terraria respecting the normal progression of this game we all like.

At a glance for now:
250+ new items and furniture
20+ enemies
1 miniboss
1 town NPC
1 new event, The Viking Invasion
1 new class ,The Runemaster
1 new biome, Svartalvheim
Some structure generations (in the snow biome)

Runes
Rune items split into 3 different categories, Minor, Normal, Major.
(For a total of 72 runes)
AlgizRune_Maj.png
FehuRune_Med.png
JeraRune_Min.png

Runes are items that you leave in your inventory to gain bonuses. The more you have, the more powerful you are but the least space you have.
Using your inventory to its full potential mixing all the runes to have unique builds fitting your play style!
All runes are crafted using a plethora of different vanilla items.

The Minor runes are crafted using a blank rune
BlankRune.png
and other items.
The Normal runes are crafted with 1 of the Minor ones plus other items
The Major runes are crafted with 1 of the Normal ones plus other items.

Here are some rune example

Runemasters
use the power of runes to enhance their runic weapons and armors.
To fight, they use Runic Tablets.
Tablets are short to mid range "cone style" attack weapons.
Runemasters have to deal with Focus and Insanity. As these tablets are so powerful, it requires a lot of willpower to use.
Insanity is generated whenever the Runemaster attack. When it's maxed, the Runemaster is greatly hurt by the power of the tablets.
Focus is generated overtime and when maxed, can be used to do powerful effect.
Using a Focus Power removes Insanity.

Touching everything, code, pixel art, ideas, whatever.
Jack of all trade master of none

Lyker - The Savior
Lots of magnificent and ravishing coding.

The Master File
The document we keep updated on what is in there and what is to come. It spoils the whole thing of course

The Mod is now opensource and everything can be found here.

I like the concept of adding a Norse flavor in. Only thing currently in the game I can think of are the Undead/Armored Vikings. Which drop a decent looking Norse Helm. The concept has a ton of potential, like maybe perhaps some Boss creatures as avatars of Norse Gods? Plus the addition of new monsters featuring Norse mythological creaures?

I think the idea could go somewhere.

Thanks a lot.
There is also the Nymph.

There is a plethora of creatures outside just normal warrior I could use indeed, from Draugr to all sorts of spirits.
I would not even need to use the gods themselves for bosses either, Jormungandr is pretty much like the Eater of World for example. Surtr would be an amazing boss in the underworld.

But heh, we'll see. Just creating a simple zombie is a challenge for now

I love the idea! I’m definitely getting this mod when it comes out!
Thanks a bunch :D

My brain had enough of code for a bit so I decided to give a go at pixel art.

Here is the old rune vs a new potential one. :sigh:

Added 2 new runes tonight and revamped the rune art (as stated above)

  • Laguz - Heal you every 10 seconds
  • Raidho - % thrower damage (I forgot to buff that poor poor thrower class)

Finally done with the basic runes.
Added the last 3 tonight for a total of 24*3 (72) runes.

  • Othala - % chance to not consume ammo
  • Perthro - inflicht random debuff on hit for 2 sec
  • Wunjo - % dmg reduction
Now that the runes are done. I can start working on the runewords.
I added the first one tonight and also updated the first post accordingly :D

I even made a logo for the mod! :kingslime:

Added a new major runeword tonight and paused the item creation for now.
I wanted to work on something else so I started working on the Viking invasion!

Here are the two sprites for some of the vikings

The Swordman and the Axeman

VikingSwordman.png
VikingAxeman.png

Next up will be Shield Maiden, Spearman and Archer for the basic enemies. Maybe I'll clone the raven and use it in here too.

"Small" Update.
We now have a working, yet simple, viking invasion.

Also, both the Swordman and the Axeman are animated (first pass).

EDIT: Also added the archer.

Had to completely redo the invasion code tonight because the other one was putting too much constraint and the lack of documentation about events is absolutely non-existent for tmodloader.
In any case, we're back to where we were and a bit more.

The invasion now has its own icon and name and is working perfectly fine.
1592252263764.png

I reworked the archer a bit.
Added a proper summoning item for the invasion, the Broken Waraxe.
BrokenWarAxe.png

I also added a reskin of the wolf and the raven to the invasion since it fits really well.

Both with their own stats and name. The Gray Wolf and the Odin's Raven.
GrayWolf.png
OdinRaven.png

Also added a new material for future used named the Nordic Wood.
NordicWood.png

It's also a tileset based on the living wood. You can see tiny rune carved on it when placed.

Spearman and Shield Maiden added to the lot.

VikingSpearman.png
VikingShieldmaiden.png

So that'll be it for the Viking Invasion enemies. Seven will be enough for now.
Now onto specific drops, enemy banners and other related things making this invasion meaningful.

This starts to look greater and greater each day!
It looked promising at the start too, but there wasn't much in it at first. But now it looks quite cool! And these weapons sprites just look awesome!
I'm curious what stuff will get added next?

Definitelly curious of things too, like if that wood type - and maybe other things too - will offer a few interesting furnitures as well?

Just on a tiny question, no horns or such on the helmets of the viking warriors?

I'm doing historical viking reenactment in real life and a thing that triggers me a lot is helmet with horns :p
Norsemen never ever had helmets with horns.
I was even thinking about changing the sprites of the undead viking within the mod to remove the horns! hahaha.

So no, there won't be any horns except for making music and/or drinking mead. Which will be in there at some point for sure.
The summon item for the invasion might turn into a horn too.

Down the line, I would love to do some viking related furniture yes. Beds and other things like that. Norsemen were amazing artisans.
It's not super important as of now though.

EDIT: Also thanks a lot for the kind words. Modding Terraria is one hell of a roller coaster so any sort of tap in a back is REALLY appreaciated. :nursepassionate:

Oh. that's interesting. I didn't know that. You learn something new all the time I guess? XD
It's just that in games, films, and all, I think the viking helmets usually have horns and stuff, that's why I was wondering about that XD They might be historically inaccurate - they look cool though anyway XD but that might be just my opinion. These vikings look cool too, I was just wondering why no horned helmets XD

I'm curious what sorts of furnitures and other things you have in mind.
Maybe blocks too.
As you said too, the snow biome is something that's just kind of bland... especially the surface. it would be interesting if it would offer a bit more than a few ice slimes hopping around.
And being able to build a viking village could be quite nice too!

Modding is tough. But the feedback you get can be very inspiring and motivating.
Keep up the good work! I'm looking forward what awesome new things will be added to this in the future~!
