Yo-yos seem op, am I missing something?

I recently found an eye of cthulhu but I really don't like yo-yos. I know re-logic loves them but when I was in school a bunch of kids would through yo-yos at me so I don't like them. But at this stage in the game the eye of cthulhu is SO GOOD! Yo-yos in general seem to be quite op, they hit super fast, have huge damage, can hit around corners, and can use melee armor even though they can reach the edge of the screen so they are as ranged as a ranged weapon. Ranged and magic weapons seem cool but ones of the same rarity don't even come close to yo-yos. Swords and boomerangs also allow you to use high defense armor but swords don't swing as fast as yo-yos hit and boomerangs don't do as much damage. Yo-yos don't pierce so you would think their weakness would be hordes of enemies but with the yo-yo bag not only does the extra yo-yo hit more enemies it also effectively doubles your dps against large bosses (which is to say all bosses minus lunatic cultist). Yo-yos seem crazy OP, but worst of all there isn't anything super cool about them. They aren't giant swords or dragons or shark mini-guns. the coolest thing they do is look like an eyeball.

I want to use something other than a yoyo but with their accuracy and DPS I feel like I am giving myself a handicap, which I shouldn't be doing because I am not very good to begin with. What should I do?

Honestly there is no real reason for you to use one, I personally on my expert world never used yo-yo's as much as some others might. I have the Terrarian as my backup melee based weapon with my first choice being the solar eruption. There are melee (bladed) varieties which fill the same dps as The Eye of Cthulhu. One being the Influx Waver from the UFO event. It has higher base dps than the Terrablade if memory serves.

Up until that point a Terrablade served me just fine. Yo-yo's are the equivalent of flails with slightly altered behavior and much like flails they to do not have anything as special about them compared to bladed weapons. Thinking along those lines they actually fill the flail gap in the progression of Terraria. The reason they also lack anything special is the natural ability to hit around corners, through blocks and at a high distance makes them particularly special and a good choice for farming. There is only really a few that can be sent out for as long as you need and besides a few that inflict debuffs there is only one which has an actual special affect being the Terrarian (the yo-yo equivalent of Terrablade).

There is no need to ever feel you have to use a specific weapon as progression always leaves a few answers to one question and for you that lies with the Influx Waver, the step up from Terrablade.
