Do scarab bombs explode even if i through them from many blocks away (high)?

I prepare for the hard-mode creating gaps with scarab bombs around my evil bios. However after i throw 4-5 bombs then i don't hear the explosion sound at all and the map doesn't show any change. So before i waste many of them trying to see how it works, does anybody know if i can throw them from any height/distance and they will explode? Or if they are too far away from me before they explode then the explosion is canceled?
 
They are linked to a timed mechanism, and will only begin angling in the direction you face when they have reached a surface, otherwise they explode in the direction they are facing when thrown
