The main goal of Terraria is to beat the bosses, the progression of what bosses you need to beat is rather hands-off for the first part, but in the later parts you need to beat them in a specific order. The wiki page for the bosses should help with that.
At the start of the game your goal is to gather the best gear you can from the caves, sky and other biomes so you can beat the early bosses (the eye of cthulhu/king slime/eater of worlds/brain of cthulhu). Don't just stay in one place, the key to getting further in the game is to get out there and find new places.
The main line to unlock new contents and even reach the credits is to beat the final boss. But the game also comes equipped with hundreds after hundreds of hours of distractions, and whether you have fun with those activities is the determining factor of if you will like the game IMO. These distractions include fishing, building, killing your friends, killing random enemies, making contraptions, and jumping over and over, this list gets bigger the more you get into the game.
