Thank you so much! Turns out I am an idiot and assumed any metal bar would work. Tried all of them except lead and iron for some reason.. Not a bug!

Here it is. Standing next to a basic workbench and an anvil

I am unable to craft some basic items like any kind of chest or a bucket, likely more. They simply do not show up in the crafting menu despite all of the conditions being met. Relocating or replacing the crafting stations does not help, using different kinds of materials does not help either...
