So far my experience with the happiness system is that it is an inconsistent mess that isn't indicated clearly enough in-game and doesn't work correctly half the time, stifling building creativity. It needs to be far more lenient on NPC distance to/from each other especially.

I haven't experienced any inconsistencies yet, but I think there should be a way to toggle it on/off. It's great because it encourages you to build actual shelters for NPCs and provides them with a little more character, but at the same time, your average casual player shouldn't be penalised for not participating in sandbox elements.

In addition to that, there's a certain charm to decorated NPC complexes, but this new system serves to limit your creativity with different housing designs.
I was just thinking about obsidian lock boxes and how they decentivize exploring the underworld is weird, due to not needing shadow chests, and how a lot of other parts of the update, pylons and dungeon, for example, make exploration more important, but then I remembered gold lock boxes do the same thing. Although water isn't(wasn't?) immediately common in the dungeon and you still needed keys so... something

Also semi related, it's also kind of odd that whips are sort of like complicated, summoner spears, and that flails were redesigned for being too similar to yoyos(although both are melee), yet spears are kept basically the same as they were despite their somewhat similarity to whips.
It's not really a problem since their different classes but ehh.

Well they changed flails, because no one was using them any more since yo-yos came around. I like the improvement
