You can use to craft itens and summon boss itens.
And you can destroy with a pwnhammer

Not so much, the Crimson Altar is necessary to craft the item to summon Eye of Cthulhu, Eater of Worlds/Brain of Cthulhu and King Slime.
But just do the items if you have good equipment.

Suspicious Lookin Eye (Eye of Cthulhu Summon Item) - 6 Lens
Worm Food (Eater of Worlds Summon item) - 15 Rotten Chunk and 30 Vile Powder < You can't make this item because your world is crimson
Bloody Spine (Brain of Cthulhu item) - 15 Vertebrae and 30 Vicious Powder
Slime Crown (King Slime Summon item) - 20 gel and a gold/silver crown

Also, kill the King Slime or the Eye of Cthulhu first.
