What accessories are you using? I find that charm of myths/philosophers' stone with cross necklace/star veil really increases your survivability. A shield and wings are a must too. And if you are still using the gatligator I would recommend using crystal bullets.(plantera is rather large, almost all the shards will hit him on a good shot)

If you want to make it really easy, make an arena with heart lanterns and campfires. This one has worked really well for me while I was testing with pre-plantera gear: The bottom doesn't have to be as big as mine, but it makes those thorn balls virtually have no effect on the battle. As for reforges, the gatligator's base damage is so low you should aim for +crit or +speed.
