Mortal Kombat and Soul Calibur have an "edgy" combo/special system which complicates things for the sake of... Not sure why.
Skullgirls uses something similar to Street Fighter's combo/special system, which has been proven once and again to be the simplest way to not have your players pulling their hair when they try to make a combo.
