Maybe I spent to much time playing Halo Reach with my friends when I was younger, but I loved being able to come up with all kinds of crazy game modes and set them up however we wanted. In a game like Mario Kart 8 though, the options for battle mode are incredibly limited. You can't change the time limit, you can't adjust the number of computers, you can't even change it to be survival like the old balloon battle.

I think old Nintendo needed more emphasis on innovation because their technology wasn't always there. Now that the tech's better I see the focus shift to atmosphere and direct presentation rather than the insane amount of polish older games are known to have. Although if I'm to be frank Breath of the Wild is my game of the year, no doubt. So idk
