The only minecraft I have played is Java. Are you saying in all other versions you have to pay for updates and stuff?

No, but there are texture packs that are owned by microsoft you have to pay to use, as well as skin packs. There is no way to get a skin pack other than paying for it.

Probally, i had a windows 7 and had java edition. But try getting the game from the actual site.
