I remember Gen 4 being limited in the fire types you can choose from. Namely, in Diamond and Pearl you only had two within the main game. Meanwhile, Platinum has only four with one of them being terrible (Flareon).

There are Ponyta, Machop/Machoke, and Meditite in the route before the town. In the route after there's much of the same but no Ponyta. Most of the Steel types in the region are on Iron Island. Incidentally, on that island is a trainer who will give you a Riolu egg if you have the space for it.
