- regular Chests/Dressers would remain the same, trash cans/barrels and the like would store less (I was thinking 20 items), and new, larger storage could be introduced to hold more items.

well, as a man of culture, I prefer modest chest sizes, though I respect the opinions of people who like 'em busty or flat
Actual opinion: introducing smaller storage items would not go over well unless there was a strong incentive to use them; like being craftable by hand, not requiring iron/lead, etc. Trash Cans and Barrels fulfill none of those criteria, so you'll probably need to introduce new items

as for larger storage, you'll want to ask yoraiz0r or someone with similar experience to see if that's possible
