This... Sounds like Monster Hunter. In particular, referencing either the switch axe or the charge blade.

The first entry in the series I obtained was Monster Hunter: World.
Unbeknownst to me, this game is essentially all multiplayer quests, so all of the hunts are much strengthened. Not having internet at the time, I was required to play the entire computer game solo.
I used the bow mainly as it allowed me the necessary space to be able to dodge most attacks.
