It's their computer so sometimes while my dad is working a message will pop up.

Well, every time you get off the computer turn the Steam status to 'Offline'.

Settings > Friends > "When I receive a message" > Uncheck both boxes.

Through the friends list, you click on the triangle near your name and choose 'Offline'.
