Yeah, Skeletron on expert was a pain. I had a rail setup for my battle with him. Just bounced back and forth while I shot at him and when he started his homing skulls I jumped the track onto a longer stretch and outran the skulls.

I've set up little areas near where the pillars spawn and have farmed for all the banners and have put them at each location. Gives you more defense and makes them easier to kill. Still have to be on the defensive but the banners help a lot.

I didn't need anything special to beat him on expert. I have a 999 block of asphalt and my nebula Mage build with lunar flare and use super heal potions along with iron skin,endurance,wrath and well fed buff. Once you have his pattern of attacks down he's easy. Now that's not sayin everyone...

Once I got my nebula mage build set up, I can tear into the moon lord (expert). Lunar Flare is where it's at.
