The making of Terraria for consoles (I was the product lead 10 years ago)

Hi Terrarians 👋 I was the original product lead for Terraria on Xbox & PlayStation (and lots of other platforms) and wrote about the experience of bringing the game to console 10 years ago, in case any of y’all are interested.
Obviously the game has evolved A LOT since then — and I haven’t been involved with the game for many years at this point — but I figured someone out there might be interested in the history

I remember starting playing Terraria on the PS3 back in 2015, pausing playing Terraria in 2017 and then, after playing on mobile from the 1.4 release till Sep 2022 now I play Terraria on PC and I never lost my interest. My interest is still growing, especially due to that soon or late 1.4.5 will release and that is the sign of an A+ game.

That was a trip down memory lane. Thanks for sharing this piece of Terraria history. I appreciate all your contributions to this silly game
Hi, Redigit. Nice to see you back on the TCF and happy new year. I hope you are feeling well!

Learning that this was a sponsored/commissioned video blew my mind. I forgot in the early days of YouTube/Influencer marketing a lot of channels didn't disclose what was/wasn't an ad.
I think I remember this video from the times I played Terraria on the PS3.
Also: Hello, ChippyGaming, how are you? I hope you do well and had an amazing holiday!

i am extremely grateful for terraria coming to console, since i am a console gamer, i figured i'd never actually be able to play terraria back then.

when it did come out on console, it was at such a terrible time in my life that it was a major benefit for my mental state.

so thanks for being the reason behind that. :dryadhappy:

These were all really fun to read, thank you for sharing! I have a quick question though. Was Ocram and his loot pool designed with only 1.1 in mind? He feels really strange in the progression of 1.2 and onward and it’s only the OG Hardmore Ore Armor (Cobalt, Mythril, and Adamantite) that are used for his crafting of his summon/drops. Thank you again for sharing this info

after reading everything closely... it doesn't sound like you played only a "small part" in this.

i mean, if you hadn't done this, terraria likely would've never made it to console... and it SOUNDS like red would've never been inspired to continue updating the game if it hadn't turned out so well, since that only happened after he played it on console according to that story and tweet.

maybe that's wrong, but if it's not, that means terraria's renewed life was thanks to your efforts, and that is something we should all be tremendously thankful for.

I started Terraria before it blew up. I was one of the “2D Minecraft” kids before I stumbled across Stampy doing a Letsplay of it. And considering his channel got me into MC, I was quick to follow with Terraria. I was a mobile player until around 2016-ish when I moved to console. In 2019, I swapped to computer and I’ve been happily playing since. I never play(ed) mainstream and popular games, I’ve always stuck to what me and my friends like to play. Indie games and smaller titles tend to cater to the playerbase and care for the input and criticism. Which is why I’ll always love Terraria. This is one of the most popular games, yet they stick to their roots and ASK for ideas. So many main titles have fallen apart due to nonchalance towards the game and only focused on Revenue and currency looking at you Microsoft and EA.
I love Terraria and the community with all my heart, and will never stop playing this game. ❤️‍🔥
