Right now, as of Terraria 1.3.5.3, the summoning class suffers from a few problems, mainly the lack of pre-hardmode weapons (hardmode isn't much better), and to a lesser extent some of them are somewhat similar in the sense that they just chase the enemy, making the class relatively "boring" in comparison to other classes.
How could these two problems be fixed? Well, moving a few weapons from the magic class could do it. The definition of summoning could be extended to weapons whose projectiles act more like sentient, alive creatures that you can control (or atleast projectiles that can be controlled to some degree and can linger for a moment) than just "magic". Here are the weapons that fit in this category:
Book of Skulls - Sure, this one may seem weird, but they can be controlled by moving you character, similar to right-clicking with summoning staves. Also, the dungeon has a lot of undead skeletons, which contribute more to the "alive" part.
Crimson Rod - Easy to obtain in pre-hardmode, controllable and mechanically similar to a sentry.
Bee Gun - The bee set is already related to the summoning class, and the Bee Gun is a weapon picked by many players in pre-hardmode, which could draw more interest to the summoning class early on.
Nimbus Rod - Similar to the Crimson Rod.
Clinger Staff - Although doesn't fits the summoning class thematically, it's a weapon that, like the summoning class, deserves more attention. Could use a buff, perhaps increasing the area of damage?
Magnet Sphere - Lingers for a long time, and it's widely used in late hardmode to kill weaker enemies.
Wasp Gun - Similar to the Bee Gun.
Spirit Flame - A somewhat underrated weapon, which summons a limited amount of homing flames around the player.
Bat Scepter - It's weird to realise this weapon isn't already a summoning weapon.
