Actually, in this 1.3 world the rows are set at -100, -1100, -2100 and -3100, because I found I liked a little bit more breathing room between the surface and the uppermost minecart tunnel . . . it was interfering with spawns in my 1.2.4 world (if I sat on the surface, enemies would spawn in the tunnel sometimes). I'm even going to infill the low surface level areas to help with that.

Actually @Zeno_magatama, this is entirely legit and done with, as I said, the ingame Cell Phone accessory (and the GPS accessory back in 1.2.4). I don't use external programs.
Well, its the Cell Phone now, but still. I dig a 5 block wide column downwards, DIRECTLY centered on spawn, then make 5-block wide rows such that "0, 1000, 2000" depth, etc, display when I'm standing on the floor of them. Subsequent columns are made centered on 1000, 2000, 3000 display, etc.
