1. I mainly use adobe photoshop but other softwares can be useful too, like PyxelEdit.
2. I could say that I am self-taught. Most of the knowledge and skill I have is from searching, getting references and practicing (principally practicing and experimenting).

3. I've been trying to draw since I was a kid and could hold a pencil. I started with digital art some time after I got my first computer (around 9 or 10 years ago). My experience with a pen tablet for digital art is 2 years.

But are you using the tablet also for terraria items, like 48x48 sprites? The Pillars and the Moon Lord were made on a tablet, right ?

From my own experience with photoshop and tablets I can say that any kind of digital art is easier with a tablet than with a mouse. While I wouldn't say Photoshop is the best software for spritework, the tablet & photoshop combo is scary powerful. Imagine making a sprite, but being able do shading and shape way more precise and naturally.
