I use the 2nd gym to level up my trapinch because there's no way I play Emerald without my Flygon. I also always lack a pokemon with surf until I catch Spheal, but that's beside the point.

No, I catch it in the desert. Then I beat the 2nd gym and after that the 5th, because you need 4 badges to fight the 5th.

You need the glasses from your rival. She gives them to you after the 4th badge.

I do know that in in Diamond I'd always do the gyms out of order because it made me feel like a badass to beat Wake earlier than I should.
