I think it's based on the name Ivan and the Japanese word Wanko which is an affectionate term for dogs.

I thought it was based on the word "iwa" meaning "rock", and "wan" being the Japanese onomatopoeia for a dog's bark.

Well it went very wrong.

Maybe because immature muricans are pronouncing it wrong. It's actually "Ee-wahn-koe", not "ee-wank-o".

Yeah, not exactly referring to that, I just think the name is stupid.
