It's definitely pretty, with a ton of bells and whistles to add to the eye candy, but in my opinion, all it boils down to is a remake of Metroid II, with a few other gimmicks thrown in to garner interest.
Then again, something similar could be said of Metroid Zero Mission when it was first released, so go figure.
