I know how to differentiate, it's just there is no prime example to follow, and the process of setting up the equation takes so much effort.

What do you mean by "setting up the equation"? Isolation of variables?

Manipulation of variables, combining of like terms to form one single equation/function, just finding the relationship between certain aspects of the problem and knowing what to do with the information
