I'm pretty sure they're melee because return to the thrower as opposed to being consumable. (In my opinion, they would fit better as thrown weapons though).
I think Journey's End is going to combine the thrower class with the ranger class, so that might clear some things up.
What I'm saying is that having a class' weapons being based around consumables is useless if its not ranged. I'm saying that we should base a new thrown class around boomerangs, then expand of them and add other weapon types like that.
Here's how I see them:
Melee: Require close-up fighting, should never leave your damn hand
Ranged: Shoots consumables
Magic: Conjures projectiles from arcane mana
Summon: Summons creatures to do the work for you
Thrown: Launch the weapon with your own hand
I think the reason the throwing class with be removed is because there are only 20 thrown weapons, and all of them are obtainable in pre-hardmode. Also the fact that even the summoner class has a Celestial Pillar, but thrown doesn't.
