I.. think I did? lol. He thought the original DK was DK, which I think most people probably think, but it is later confirmed that it was Cranky Kong. DK Jr. is the son of Cranky, and current day DK is the son of DK Jr.
Basically I think "Donkey Kong"'s just used as a title. Cranky retired and is no longer Donkey Kong, so the new youngest kong now uses the title.
