I don't have an answer for the question of the day, but regarding your unrelated note, I'm pretty sure that's a psychological effect (I can't remember what it was called)
Basically, it's not that people didn't use it before, but just that you never noticed it, at best you thought it's a word you don't know, or you just overlook it...
Edit: You just have hightened awareness for it, if you get what I mean.
