Pretty sure only the Wall of Flesh is mandatory* in pre-Hardmode because you need to kill it to progress into Hardmode. All other bosses is just to gain access to items to make the fight easier.
*Thinking on it, I THINK the Eater of Worlds/Brain of Cthulhu are required also so you can get a pick to mine Hellstone to allow you to mine Hardmode ores.
