1.3 NPC discussion

I decided to start a thread specifically about npcs in 1.3.

So it looks like we are getting at least 2 new npcs:

1. A friendly tax collector who we don't know much about.
2. A skeleton merchant as seen in the trailer, who may or may not sell throwables.

As well as new npcs, old ones will also be improved on. They can defend themselves, sit on chairs and socialise. It appears that all npcs will have a unique ability such as the dyrad with her leaf shield, and the nurse healing herself. From previous spoilers, it looks like the merchant and travelling merchant will sell new items. Some npcs are also getting graphical changes, which can be seen on the upcoming features page of the wiki.

What are your thoughts on the new npcs and them being able to defend themselves? What new ones are you hoping for? I would really like a martian NPC. I'm so glad that they no longer stand in front of chests. That was annoying. Let's talk about them here.
 
I want four new NPCs. I LOVE building creative houses for NPCs so four new ones would be GREAT! I'm glad they won't sit in front of chests now, that was so annoying. The worst. Them defending themselves will be nice, too.
 
I notice that the changelog indicates that certain NPCs that require a certain number of other NPCs to spawn (such as the party girl and dye trader) now require more NPCs to spawn. I wonder if that means we'll be getting a bunch more NPCs, and the number was raised to compensate?

It would be interesting to see NPCs themed on the snow and desert biomes, like how the Witch Doctor represents the jungle and the Pirate and Angler represent the ocean. Maybe a Genie NPC for the desert, and a Barbarian/Eskimo NPC for the snow biome?

Maybe a Gambler NPC which allows you to play a gambling mini-game as a alternate source of cash? Or a Beastmaster NPC which sells extra pets/mounts/summoning gear.
