Is anyone interested in a mod to improve the game's lighting? Does anyone know of any lighting mods that have been created?
I was initially interested in "fixing" lighting because I noticed that light can only change direction 3 times when spreading. Light always spreads down-up, right-left, down-up, right-left. That is why sometimes if a torch is in a hole with an opening that is diagonal, the light can't spread very far. You can see this problem looking at the first image below.
The second image below is a sample from a prototype mod that updates light spread so that light can turn as many times as needed. It looks identical to the game's default lighting except when light spreads in a path that turns at least 3 times. The final image is from a prototype that allows light to spread in 8 directions. This results in torches casting light in an octagon shape instead of a diamond shape. Light reduction on the diagonal happens at a rate of 1.4 instead of 2.
