Exactly! They use different layers to allow the moving to work better.

Looking a little further, it seems they do indeed duplicate the entire sprite for the animated waterfalls. Also, as can be seen in the files above, unlike other Terraria art they don't use 2x2 pixels.

Terraria Backgrounds are made up of many smaller (and a big sprite or two) all put together. It runs layers and what not. Unfortunately, you'll need to make more than one sprite).

I'm aware it's been 6 years but if you have some of the updated ones (Primarily forest, like that lake one especially) I'd love them for another project, thanks!

Note that I don't need every frame of the animations for what I'm doing

I think it's just a realy large sprite.

wrong! there are several scrolling at different speeds to simulate distance known as parallax scrolling
