Didn't find thread like this.
I think this is the great addiction to the game.

Button will have one pulse only with delay.
There could be more than one button: with 1, 3 and 5 seconds delay before pressing again(in that time you couldn't press the button)
You could place buttons on the side of the block and on the wall.

Example.: Button is connected to the circle with lava pumps. By pressing the button, circle will be activated one time (one lava flow[up to 4 tiles - that's how pump work]).
Now there are switches in game, they also are activating the pumps when turning off. And so that's the next topic:.

There could be some indicator for the wires, that are active(e.g.: brighter, dotted) [Binary 0/1]. You could always turn off this feature in options or in "Grand Design" under-inventory menu.

Inverters and on/off indicators don't make sense in Terraria - Terraria's wiring doesn't work in a binary on/off system, it works in an event driven pulse system - when you activate a switch, pressure plate etc it sends a pulse along the wire that hits every connected tile. When tile receive a pulse, they do something. But there's no such thing as on or off really.
