PS3 Can PS3 and Vita/PS4 players play together?

Hi everyone. I tried searching for an existing thread on this topic but no luck.

I've been looking around online and some people say it works, some say it's impossible.

Basically I'm playing Terraria on my PS3 and I'm wondering if I can play online with my friend who has the game on PS4 and Vita. Someone on another forum said it's possible only if the PS4 player is online and hasn't selected 'invite only'. Any feedback on this would be greatly appreciated, I really want to link up with my friend! He got me sucked right into the game when I played on his PS4.

TL;DR I want to play online with my friends who have PS4 or Vita but I only have a PS3 :confused:
 
PS3 and Vita can play together, but idk about PS4. Just look through the front page threads and look for the one about PS4 and XBone releases of terraria.
