Just press interact on a sink with a Plate selected in the Hotbar. At that point, you stand in front of said sink, and are shown cleaning the dish with running water and a yellow sponge. The animation of washing the plate lasts a few short seconds, and functionally does nothing for you. The Plate is returned to your inventory once the action is done.
I imagine you can also do something similar to this with Bottles, Cups, and Mugs.
This just serves as an aesthetic thing, and doesn’t really change anything.
