Aaaahhhhhhgggggghhhhhhh

*WHAM*
*Explosion*

Should have activated return thrusters

Oh uhh, hello! As you can see from the cracked, smoking remains of my ship, I'm Crashtronaut. This is my first time crashing in the suggestions section, so any constructive criticism is appreciated.:)

To business: I always liked interesting or helpful tooltips for items, buffs, and equipment ("not to be confused with a hamdrill"-Pickaxe Axe) but it seems that most items have nothing to explain their use or make them interesting. I'm going to try to change that.

I am not going to write a tooltip for every item in the game, just a few from different "categories" to illustrate what this could become. Any suggestions for tooltips can and will be added to this post, and I will periodically update with more if people like the idea.

Here they are.

I will refine my format and content and add as many tool tips as possible if the general idea is accepted.

Can anyone direct me to a page explaining how to insert small, backgroundless images into posts? I want to put a small image of each item next to each tooltip for aesthetic purposes:)

Should I simply use the "insert thumbnail" image option?

Tooltips are something I have a love/hate relationship with. Most suggestions for new items includes a tooltip, despite comparatively few items in-game having a tooltip.
Personally, I don't want more fluff text on items. So I don't want more tooltips unless they convey useful information to the player. The suggested Silt / Slush tooltips are OK, though the Extractinator already mentions this.

Sorry. While I appreciate the effort that's gone into it, I don't support it.

Thanks! That makes sense and I see how it could be annoying to people (more text when mousing over things that you are intimately familiar with and so forth)

I like it mainly for accentuation of the ambiguous "background situation/story" that terraria seems to have (just look at all the fanfiction on this forum!)

Thank you for being honest and pretty fair, I do appreciate it :)

I like background stories in games too. (NWN and NWN2 come to mind as examples of games with items that can have comprehensive back stories.) But I just don't think a tooltip text is the right place for it in Terraria. If there was an item "properties" or encylopaedia of items, it'd be perfect and I'd gladly read through everything.

encylopaedia of items

Yup this thread must die.

No more shall the items of terraria be cluttered with pointless flavor text.

But the legends of the items of terraria will be born anew as the Phoenix

A new thread shall rise, and devour the planet of tooltips.

And it shall be truly beautiful.
I hope

Prepare for the...

ENCYCLOPAEDEA
TERRARIA

I'm basically going to remake the thread with more detail and grandeur, and let it tell you useful/cool things about (if possible) every other item in the game.

Thank you for the idea. I will request a lock on this thread and create a new one soon. If you like I will mention you as the author of the original concept.

Good luck - I look forward to it! I'm a collector / completionist, so I need everything. An encyclopaedia or similar would suit my gotta catch 'em all tendencies.

No need to mention me - another idea for an encyclopaedia of enemies was around recently; I was just extending that thinking to items. :)

If you're going about making a reference-like thing for items, here are some additional things you can include, as applicable: How it's crafted, what recipes it's used in, what enemies drop it, where it can be found, and exact stats (for knockback, use time, etc.).

I think that I may omit really specific stats (the wiki is for that I suppose)

This is going to be a ton of fun for me! Perhaps the interface could have different "tabs" for different letters ( tab 1 is all items a-g)

or for different kinds of items (potions, weapons, accessories) and items within those tabs would ba alphabetized.

I'll think hard about format of content, and I'll be working on this for a while. Thanks for your support!

I'm going to lock this thread now tho.
