title clarification: axolotls are not dumb. this mod is dumb
Simple. Axolotls are critters that spawn in underground/caverns water. However, if you kill an axolotl, it'll summon the axolotl king. The axolotl king has identical stats to the dungeon guardian. If you somehow kill the axolotl king, it'll drop an item called "Axolotl Slayer's Pendant", which when used will give you the Axolotl Slayer debuff (important detail) that is permanent (until you die) and behaves identically to the gills potion. It will also summon another axolotl king. If you kill the axolotl king while having the Axolotl Slayer effect, it will instead drop the axolotl pet item and remove the debuff. The axolotl pet buff behaves identically to the gills potion, just like the Axolotl Slayer debuff.
