It is possible to get free medals by making new characters and taking them to the related npc in your world.
This can be useful in pre-hardmode when the total reward of the event is only 5 medals, and your character is still not as powerful, and you want the forge.
Warning:
By doing this your character will receive help from other characters, which usually lessens the game's challenge in single player mode.
