I was just thinking... Sunflowers give the useful Happy buff, but only in an area, and it can be difficult to spread them around the world optimally, especially early-game and in large worlds full of areas they can't be planted. So what if there was an alternate way to get the buff before heading out for that nice speed boost?

Cue: Town pets! We already have the option to pet them (best feature) but why not let it build up the Happy buff? Say for every second you keep petting an animal, you get 6 seconds of Happy buff, up to a maximum of 3 mins duration (from 30 seconds of petting, if you really want the buff to last that long). It starts counting down once you stop petting.

On a related note, NPCs are able to cohabit with animals inside one house, but it doesn't appear to give them any benefits. There are situations where you can't quite fit a specific NPC or two into the right situation to get their happiness to the level you want it at without messing up another NPC's happiness... The solution? Give them a pet! Pets make people happy!

You could even add another layer of needless complexity to the system by making certain NPCs prefer certain animals. Tax Collector? Cat person, dogs are too much work. Pirate? Can't stand Bunnies (after all, he sells the Bunny Cannon), but a good loyal dog is just up his alley. Guide? The classic Terraria Bunny is his go-to favourite, though he's happy with anything. Etc.
