Heart lanterns not dropping after being destroyed on a cracked dungeon brick

Heart lanterns don't seem to be dropped after you place them then destroy them under cracked dungeon bricks. I've tried this with banners and they seem to drop normally.
 
I'm not sure what the exact conditions were when it was originally happening, but I've been testing for a while and haven't been able to make it happen again. If I can manage to get it on video in the future I will let you know.
