Game Mechanics How about adding a luck bonus to certain bait based on biome?

We all know fishing can be a chore at times. What might make it slightly more interesting is if bait critters from various biomes granted additional luck (or perhaps an increased fishing skill bonus) in biomes other than where they were caught. For example; a jungle buggy might confer a +5 fishing skill if used in a desert biome. The idea being that perhaps fish in the desert biome might prefer an 'exotic' meal over the usual fare.

Alternatively, perhaps that same jungle buggy would provide a short 3-5 minute buff for desert fishing to haul up crates, special fish (blue rarity or higher) or random biome specific mobs (probably would be a chore to code, but I can't help but think Red would like this one). After the buff expires, perhaps a jet-lag (fish-lag?) debuff similar to potion debuffs affects the player for 6-10 minutes, so as to avoid encouraging spamming the buff, and to make the buff feel like a bonus rather than a new baseline.

Anyway, that's my 2cp.

We were thinking the exact opposite. Having the biome critter give a bonus to its existing biome, because that would likely be what the fish would eat. Introducing new elements would confuse the fish, and they wouldn't know if it was edible or not. I guess people can think different about this

I could see valid points for either option. You're obviously correct that fish generally tend to eat what they've already figured out is food.

There is also occasions where fish are either less discriminating, or are just plain curious about a new potential food source. Not to be macabre, but take sharks for instance... the way they 'smell' a potential food is to nip at it. This is how most people get bit... they get near a curious shark... the shark nips at them, decides they're not food and swims away. Another great example are adorable little puffer-fish... if they see any animal which has a shell, they become visibly excited... even if they haven't encountered it before. Cuddle fish also react similarly.

All that aside, in terms of game-play, I like the idea of going somewhere to get bait... it kind of makes the act of getting bait an adventure. Conversely, getting bait in the same biome you're intending to fish is less... exploratory, I guess?

The mechanic could also be a case of 'exotic' bait only attracting specific fish, ala the existing truffle worm / Duke Fishron encounter.

Either way, I like both options. Anything that helps make fishing more interesting, and less grindy, is a big plus in my book.

I agree with this. It would be easier and make more sense for bait that can be caught where you're fishing to give increased luck or fishing power. Maybe also make golden bait give increased luck no matter where you're fishing.

The aforementioned suggestion in question: Game Mechanics - Better Biome/Critter Fishing

but uh, yea. How did I not think of luck? I just tacked on fishing power lol
