I really want to try Journey mode so it's easier to build, but I'm worried that beating the game on Journey isn't actually beating the game properly.

It's a singleplayer game, however you want to define cheating or beating the game "properly" is up to you, if you don't wanna feel alone I will say a lot of people do use Journey mode for regular playthroughs but they don't wanna grind for a specific resource or don't wanna deal with biome spread. However you wanna play as long as you're having fun is the proper way to play the game.

Nah, the devs never stated it to be cheating, plus is it cheating if the game provides Journey Mode to you?
