Make chimneys produce an actual physical smoke effect that travels through the air. This could be done with particle physics in mind so that the smoke can be blown in the wind (which is really the only reason I'm suggesting this). I love buulding homes with fireplaces and chimneys, and seeing the smoke blowing in the breeze would add just that little bit of atmosphere to improve them.
