Paint: A Reference Guide

As any builder knows, there are lots of blocks, bricks, and walls to work with. Making things even more versatile (and complex), we also have paint. Without a reference guide, color testing all the possible combinations is a time consuming and tedious process, which is where this guide comes in, compiling all these combinations for (relatively) easy reference.

All blocks, bricks, and walls available as of 1.3 are accounted for, with some exceptions listed below. Blocks, bricks, and walls not craftable by players are also included, because sometimes world generated ones are exactly the look you're after (although these must be placed with an editing program such as TEdit).

Almost all work was done in TEdit.

For those on PC or Mac, you can download the world file here. For those on mobile or console, or if you'd just prefer images for reference, you can download the map as reference images here (55 Mb) (blocks, bricks, and associated walls) and here (21 Mb) (wallpapers and all other walls). The image files are high quality jpg, with bubble and cloud saved as png due to their transparency. (Files are stored on google drive. It will say it's not viewable and then give you an option to download.)

Some notes:
  • World generated and player crafted walls which are visually identical only have the player crafted version included. Where possible, world generated and player crafted walls with different textures will be placed together.
  • In game, rainbow brick and wall ignore paint. It's included only for the sake of completeness.
  • I have not labeled which walls or bricks are player craftable/placeable, but I did include a non-painted reference for each. If you want to know if it's player placeable, hit it with a decent pick/hammer and if it doesn't end up in your inventory, it's not player placeable.
  • There is no option to actuate things. This might (might) be added in the future.
  • This map will chew through your memory and eventually crash the game if you try to map it all at once.

Because this guide is concerned only with blocks, bricks, walls, and wallpapers, the following are not included:
cobweb
natural vines
thorns
ice (disappears; created by the ice rod)
active/inactive stone block (identical to stone/actuated stone)
platforms
light sources

Is there a way to create a chart for all of the console and mobile players out there? TEdit worlds do us no good. :(

Example: http://hydra-media.cursecdn.com/terraria.wiki.gg/a/a4/Block_Reference.png
Once TEdit is stable with 1.3, I'll be updating this and then going through and making screenshots of each block/wall for those who don't want to or can't use .wld files. I can't offer ETA for when that will happen, unfortunately, as it's time consuming to take and piece together screenshots and I have no reliable access to internet atm. But yes, there will be reference pics available at some point.

Thank you for making this, it is really helpful. Just to let you and everyone else thinking of downloading this however, the "Sandstone brick, sand, and sandstone wall" column's sign is marked as "Crimstone, crimsand and crimstone wall." While the column next to it is crimstone, crimsand and crimstone wall. Might want to add that in as an edit.

Thanks for catching that. :) That was a TEdit copypasta issue and I thought I'd caught all of the mislabels. Clearly not. :sigh:

This is awesome \o/ I was still working off the compilation from back in 1.2 and not having brown was killing me! It's a shame that this one is configured vertically instead of like those, which makes it much harder to see them all on a screen at a glance, but it's still a useful reference! Thanks!

These don't seem to include platforms? I know they're technically furniture, and it would be a pain in the :red: to include all furniture, but they fit neatly into existing categories (wood, <biome> wood, granite, marble, etc.) I for one would find it extremely helpful.

I may add platforms when I add the new walls and what not that have been added with the most recent updates, since I do have wood beams in there. I haven't had time or energy to update this the last several months and with moving soon across country (again), it will be at least a few weeks before I have a chance to do anything.

Where from and to? I hope your move goes well.
