Portfolio/Multi-Topic Possible Future Ocean Update: My Ideas

Terraria: Ocean Update

With the recent addition of the Orca and less recent addition of the Fish you can see while fishing, I decided to put out my full ideas for a possible Ocean Update.

(Note: Terraria usually doesnt do entire updates based on one topic, this could make just be some part of a bigger future update)

Creatures
The Oceans of the real world have many unique and special creatures, many of them I think could fit in Terraria. Heres my list

Hermit Crab
0EDF2480-024A-412E-A080-20B4BC38A50E.jpeg

Hermit Crabs are small shelled crustaceans that populate the warmer oceans of the world. Heres my ideas for them in Terraria:

Ai Type: Passive AI

Max Life: 5

Spawns: Pre-Hardmode

Hermit Crabs are small critters found quite commonly on beaches. Unlike there Terraria counterpart, the normal crab, these are completely passive critters. They could be picked up in a net and placed in a terrarium like other critters. They also would have a rare gold counterpart.

There would be a few designs for Hermit Crabs, similar to a few other critters. Along with this, in Underwater Chests there could be a chance to get an “Occupied Shell”, which summons the hermit crab pet.

These small critters would also occasionally hide as a normal seashell, protecting them from any danger (specifically the player).

These hermit crabs would add nice asthetics to beaches because of there unique shells, and would make a good critter for any terrarium zoos someone could be making.

Coconut Crab
F100BCA5-1FAD-4112-8BDE-2A4A675D7263.png

Coconut Crabs are large crusteaceans that populate a few island around the ocean.

Ai Type: Hostile AI

Max Life: 150, 200, 250

Damage: 120, 150, 190

Spawns: Hardmode

Coconut Crabs are medium sized enemies similar to the Crab counterpart. They are agressive, and will kill any critter that walks into it. They would be Uncommon, and spawn mostly close to the edge of the beach. They have a crushing claw, and do alot of damage.

They could have 2 color varients, Red and Blue, both having the same stats.

On death they would rarely drop the “Meaty Claw” which could be used as a weapon (more details in the items category). They could also more commonly drop the Large Crab Shell which could be cooked into seafood dinner.

They could also have a chance of being fished up, similar to blood moon fishing except instead it is just any time.

These Coconut Crabs would bring new enemies to the beach, as i feel it is lacking is custom naturally spawning enemies. These would also go along with the previously mentioned Hermit Crab, as one is a critter and one is a enemy.

Sailfish
B3FE961E-BF72-4BB1-8A50-B6D4CD040414.jpeg

Sailfish are large fish related to both Swordfish and Marlins. They are large and use there sword like purtrusion as a weapon against fish. They are common for commercial fishing, as many people want to aquire them.

Ai Type: Nuetral AI (Attacks only when attacked)

Max Life: 100, 120, 150

Attack: Pre Hardmode: 20, 40, 65. Hardmode: 45, 60, 80

Spawns: Pre Hardmode

Sailfish are large fish that will spawn completely underwater. They are nuetral, and will only attack the player if they are attacked first. Unline the swordfish (Item) the Sailfish is a creature, and is similar to the green slime in there personality when being attacked.

They would spawn near the top of the water, and would only have 1 color variation.

They would drop sailfish, which would be able to be cooked into cooked fish.

These fish would add to the oceans of terraria, as currently the only creatures living UNDERwater are the Shark, Seahorse, and occasionally Dolphin and probably Orca. They would also attack the cod.

Cod
D03131CC-A774-4100-96B2-A8392DD12A2E.jpeg

Cod are medium sized fish and are quite common where they live, and a popular fish to fish. They can get pretty large, but overall are medium sized.

AI Type: Passive Ai

Max Life: 5

Spawns: Pre-Hardmode

Cod are fish that would spawn completely in the ocean. Although there is already an item for it, I think out of any basic fish these ones would belong the most. They are counted as critters, although could not be picked up, similar to the dolphin. They would be hunted by the Sailfish, and would drop the atlantic cod item on death.

They could also be hunted by both Dolphins and Sharks, making them the bottom of the food chain in the ocean.

Luckily though, they would spawn in large numbers and would spawn quite commonly, meaning there population wouldnt completely die from all this hunting,

They could spawn in 3 sizes, Small (Common), Medium (Common), and Large (Uncommon). Although this is mainly for athstetics and not for any practical use.

Cod would add some just some nice fish to creatures to hunt, and for players to admire.

Loon
B922A70D-81CD-4B3E-B7E4-18F5ECAFC975.jpeg

Loons are duck-sized birds that are found mostly in lakes. Although they arent usually found near the ocean, they are occasionally sighted there.

AI Type: Passive AI

Max Life: 5

Spawns: Pre-Hardmode

Loons are mediumish birds that are most commonly found in the ponds and lakes of temperate America and Canada. They would be most common in Forest Lakes, Tundra Lakes, and occasionally the ocean. If there is a loon around, fish will be less common in that area your trying to fish.

They are similar to ducks and grebes, and could be put in a terrarium. They are also similar to grebes as in they dont have a golden varient.

They have unique calls, such as the iconic “wail” call, although there other calls could also be heard when they are around.

Other than that, theyre behaviors are about the same as the ducks and grebes, only with unique calls and unique colors.

These Loons would bring personality into the lakes of these biomes, and there beutiful call would really make a nice ambient effect when traveling these biomes.

Oarfish
641E889A-861F-40B2-A54B-1CA9D0BE8277.jpeg

Oarfish are the worlds largest bony fish, and can exceed lengths of up to 30 feet long. They are found primarily in the deep sea, althoigh will also occasionally wash up on shore.

AI Type: Passive AI

Max Life: 20

Spawns: Pre-Hardmode

Oarfish are large fish that would spawn primarily in the deeper waters, preferably in those underwater curvy caves. They are quite rare, and usually stick to the deep parts of the ocean, although possibly if a thunderstorm event starts, they could spawn higher up.

On death they would drop a new item simply called “Oarfish”, which could be cooked into “Steamed Oarfish” which would give the Exquisitly Stuffed effect for 10 minutes. The item could also be fished up very rarely in the ocean.

Oarfish would be the new longest fish in the game, and because of this couldnt be caught in a net or terrarium. They wouldnt be multi-segmented and instead would just be one long sprite.

These fish would add a new great way of food, along with more deep sea exploration, as we do not have any proper deep sea animals yet. This would add greater exploration to the depths of the ocean.

Cachalot Whale/Sp3rm Whale
5F1E203C-DCF6-4871-AD99-AF837267AD5A.jpeg

Cachalot Whales are the largest toothed whale, and are great rivals with squids. They are quite large, and one of the largest if not the largest deep sea creature.

AI Type: Nuetral

Max Life: 300, 500, 750

Attack: 130, 190, 230

Spawns: Post-Plantera

Cachalot Whales are new nuetral creatures that will only attack if hurt first. They have unique calls, and will also be the first whale in Terraria. They will hunt down and attack any Squids if they go too deep. They also only spawn Post-Plantera.

When killed they wont drop anything besides extra coins. They are the new largest creature in the game, and will occasionally go closer to the surface. They are able to temporarily jump out of the water to attack higher up targets, and will also occasionally attack the Oarfish.

Due to them being one of the loudest creatures on earth, when they rarely make there calls they will give a new effect called “Ruptered” which slows down the player and makes them use there tools faster, along with slightly giving them less good sight, this effect only lasts 5 seconds, and they will use it more when in combat.

They will also attack any Crabs, Hermit Crabs, or Coconut crabs that they find in the deep sea.

These Cachalot Whales add a lot in terms of unique stuff, and will be the new largest creature, breaking a new record. They will be the first whale, and as with the oarfish, will make exploring the underwater taverns more exciting with more things to do down in them.

Vaquita
16565EB8-0D7D-4531-8382-88802EDC4A65.jpeg

Vaquitas are a very small cetacean and also the most endangered out of all of them with only 11 expected left.

AI Type: Passive AI

Max Life: 5

Spawns: Pre-Hardmode

Vaquitas are very rare ceteceans that would act similar to dolphins except instead of floating to the waters surface to jump and play, they would most stay underwater fairly deep but not too deep. They would be incredibly rare, and would mostly be added as a new rare creature to find.

They wouldnt drop anything, and may be caught when fishing unfortunately, as this is a reference to them constantly being caught in nets. This ceteacen would be added possibly to bring it to attention.

These creatures are completely peacful, and will spawn if there is no active players around currently.

They would be added to spread awareness, along with a new reason to dive in underwater, and learn about unique creatures, even thought they arent popular in the mainstream.

Blue Ringed Octopus
1EFB1331-8E49-4458-B3DE-11A53A5C5F6D.jpeg

The Blue Ringed Octopus is a highly venomous small species of octopus commonly found in warmer climates.

AI Type: Agressive(ish)

Max Life: 20, 40, 70

Damage: 150, 250, 310

Spawns: Hardmode

The Blue Ringed Octopus is a new kinda agressive octopus. By kinda agressive I mean that it doesnt attack the player, instead it is more of a trap, as if you touch it it will do mass amounts of damage, along with giving the poision effect. Its hard to recover from one of these attacking you.

These would sit at the bottom of the fairly high seafloor, although would occasionally move just a bit.

They are quite small, and are hard to see sometimes, although there vibrant blue and orange colors can help you notice them sitting on the seafloor. They would also get hunted by Cachalot Whales if they get too close.

These would bring new dangers to simply pacing on the seafloor, and could mabye convince players to start getting more proper swimming gear when swimming through the ocean.

Items

Occupied Shell
Summons the Hermit Crab pet, a new pet that is simply a smaller hermit crab that follows you around. Could possibly have color varients

Colorful Seashell
A new decorative item that spawns naturally on beaches. Similar to the normal seashell, except unique colorations for players to collect

Meaty Claw
A new weapon that deal 56 damage, although swings quite slowly. It is a very rare drop from the Coconut Crab.

Large Crab Shell
A new item that is more commonly dropped by the Coconut Crab. It can be cooked into Seafood Dinner.

Sailfish (Item)
A new item either dropped by Sailfish or rarely fished up that could be cooked into cooked fish

Oarfish (Item)
A new item which could be either obtained by killing an Oarfish or very rarely fished up. It could be cooked into Steamed Oarfish

Steamed Oarfish
A new food item that could be eaten to get the Extinguishly Stuffed effect for 10 minutes.

Old Looking Coin
A rare item found in underwater chests. It can be sold for 20 gold coins, making it a good early way to make money.

Conclusion

That is my idea for a full ocean update to Terraria. It is mainly focused on more exploring and adding life to the beaches and oceans, and also to help conserve these species in the real world.
Now I probably wont see the day when all of these get added, but I atleast hope that this helped with some suggestions for the next update.

I spent a long time writing this, so yeah.

Anyway, thanks for reading, and have a nice day all you Terraria-Doers.

:)
