Fairly sure this falls under the multiplayer desync category, but it appears that lava is glitching through blocks. I doubt it was any kind of new trap that I didn't know off---the edges of the blocks where the lava had glitched through are different than the ones that surround the lava pool. Almost like the blocks surrounding it hadn't been broken. Plus, I hadn't seen any pressure plates and neither did my sister.
This has only happened just now in the underground hallow biome. Nowhere else.
