Hello fellow builders.
I have a few methods for creating castles that are designed not just to spawn NPCs, but to keep them, and the player, safe.
First of all, you need to measure your builds using jump height and safe fall distances. Your player is able to fall the exact distance down as it takes to do four normal, gear-free jumps upward, or about 24 blocks. A "jump" is about 6 blocks high, which is the same maximum height a new character with no accessories can build.
First, hack down that first tree as fast as you can and slap down a work bench as usual, and make a bit of wooden wall and platform. You want to build with this wall a pillar 6 blocks high, then plant a platform at the top. Now jump to that platform and repeat twice more. THIS is the height you want to start building your house. Use a rope (or chain) to reach your door and remove the platform you used to jump up to begin your build. Now your building is protected from most standard mobs, like zombies, you have little to worry about from Blood Moon. Some other considerations are;
Also, you will want to add self shutting doors once you rescue the Engineer. I do not recommend using Tall Gates or Trap Doors on your main entrance as they don't behave the way doors do.
To wire up a self-shutting door takes two player-activated pressure plates, platform (1 or 2 per door) and the wrench of your choice. Oh, and of course, the doorway itself.
This door is roughly 15 blocks off the ground, no basic jumping mobs can achieve that height.
The point of this is NOT to have a door that opens FOR YOU. The point here is to have a door that is NEVER left open by accident, so flying mobs can NEVER accidentally float into your house. To make sure you ALWAYS press the plate when you pass through a doorway, place platform in a way that ensures the plate will be pressed, allowing enough room for the door to swing open BOTH ways. A mob can follow you in, IF that mob is already on top of you, but for the most part it is nearly impossible for mobs to enter your house through a door that is set up like this because NPCs never touch the door and the door is NEVER left open. Notice the entrance door is NOT part of a room occupied by an NPC.
You want to use WALL to elevate your house for three reasons;
After all those considerations, you can still have a castle that both functions and looks decent. It will be impervious to normal-mode mobs and events, and easy to defend for most hard-mode conditions.

- Don't build next to tall hills, cliffs, or other structures
- Don't attach any arenas or pathways to your build as monsters may climb them, or even spawn ON them, to enter your home
- Don't build your house closer than two jumps (12 blocks high) off the ground, but you don't really need to go ANY higher than 3 jumps. Some mobs in hard mode jump higher than zombies.
- Go higher than 4 jumps (24 blocks) and falling can hurt/kill you. There's no reason to go THAT high.

You want to use WALL to elevate your house for three reasons;
- you get 4 blocks of height per block used to make wall, meaning you can get elevated using less block.
- ghostly mobs, like wraiths, can use blocks to "swim" up into your home. Very few surface mobs use wall to reach your door (but they do exist so beware).
- mobs can use blocks and platform to hop up to your home, but they most often can't use wall, chain, or rope.
After all those considerations, you can still have a castle that both functions and looks decent. It will be impervious to normal-mode mobs and events, and easy to defend for most hard-mode conditions.
